Resize Filegroups Allocation on restore

Hi, I have a database with about 200Gigs allocated to filegroups and 200Megs data in it presently, and am trying to create a copy of the database on the same server - except I don't have enough diskspace free for another 200Gigs. Is there a way using copy database wizard, or restore that the filegroup allocations can be resized?

Thanks,
Chris

Unfortunately, no.

Backup copies physical blocks and puts them back in the same place that they came from.

Even if your database is only using 200MB out of 200GB, there is no assurance that the 200MB is nicely located in the front of the data files.

Your options are:

If the source database doesn't need to be that big, you can run DBCC SHRINKDATABASE on it and then back it up, or you can temporarily restore the database on a 3rd machine, run SHRINKDATABASE on it, back it up, and take it to your smaller machine.

reserved character issue in create folder

When I try and create a folder using the following syntax:
folder/subfolder/anotherfolder
I get the following error
The item name is not valid. Item names cannot contain the following reserved
characters ;?:@.&=+$,\*<>|"/, and cannot consist exclusively of dots or spaces.
When checking the MSDN documentation for the ReportServices CreatFolder I
noticed it contains the following comment:
Folder names cannot be null, consist of empty strings, or contain the
following reserved characters:
: ? ; @. & = + $ , \ * > < | . "
The difference is the message my ReportServer is giving me includes the '/'
character, while the documentaion does not.
This is causing a great deal of pain with my deployment scripts and I can't
find any information on this issue.Hi
Generally, you need to create folders one level at a time.
folder
cd folder
then
subfolder
cd subfolder
then
anotherfolder
cd anotherfolder

situation would help. I am currently working on a setup/deployment project
that will install our SRS reports on the target machine. I am using the web
service interface to set up the directory structure and deploy reports via
the CreateFolder method. Including the '/' in the CreateFolder call works on
every machine in the organization except my local developer installation.
Furthermore, the MSDN docs do not list the '/' as a reserved character.
However, my SRS installation returns an error listing the '/' as a reserved
character. I would assume this is a bug having to do with my configuration
and was wondering id anyone else had experienced this.

Required Role for SQL 2005 Security operations

We need a user with db_owner permissions plus permission for these
operations:
Create db master key
Create certificate
Create symmetric key
And decrypt / encrypt by key
should it be securityadmin?
YanivHi ,Yaniv
BOL says , if you want the user to perfom CREATE CERTIFICATE for example
,so
'Requires CREATE CERTIFICATE permission on the database.'
Read the BOL for each statement that you need and make a decision. You may
want to consider create a ROLE which will contain all those requierd
permissions

Pl tell me this senario

if we create new database in sql 2000 with size 1024 KB now we insert 500 KB data in that database. so what is actual size of database now?

That depends how your database (files) is (are) extended. The default is defined by the model database which is by default 10Percent / unlimited unless you change the model database or the files in the appropiate database.

The next steps for extending the database would be in your case:

1MB
1,1 MB
1,21 MB
1,33 MB
1,46 MB
1,61 MB

Unfortunately there really are quite a few errors in it. I suggest you start with a simpler version and then expand it as you get experience. A few corrections:it is not complete code snippet (the 'for' loop at the end is obviously incomplete, plus you have variables which you never use)

Request for SqlCeEngine.Exists(), .Delete() methods

Given a connection string, I can create a database using a SqlCeEngine object and call engine.CreateDatabase().

However, there doesn't seem to be a way to determine whether a database exists, given a connection string. I would need to interpret the connection string myself and extract the file name to use File.Exists() etc.

There should be SqlCeEngine methods to test whether a database exists, test whether it's accessible, and to delete it, given a connection string.

Cheers, Oli

It is unlikely that would be added as you can easily do that with simple string manipulations and classes from System.IO – you already know how.

In compact world (where keeping size down is very important) functionality is usually added only if it’s not possible (or very hard) to do or if it’s some very common task. One example would be multiple connections support added in SQL Mobile. Your task is easy to do with existing functionality and it’s not that common – usually connection string is constructed from file name.

In any case you’re welcome to submit a request via Product feedback site: http://connect.microsoft.com/Main/content/content.aspx?ContentID=2220

|||

Hmm...I can get you a work around if you are taking connection string as input.

This should help you!

conn = new SqlCeConnection(inputConnectionString);

if (File.Exists(conn.DataSource))

File.Delete(conn.DataSource);

The important thing to note here is that, Connection Object parses the connection string the moment you assign it (need not call Open). And DataSource property will return the Database File Path.

Laxmi

Republisher replication model

Hi, how can be implemented republisher replication model?
When I first configure and create a publication "P1", and then create pull
subscripton on "RP1 = Publishing subscriber" everything is ok. But whenever I
try to create a new Publication on RP1 I get an error message which says that
before creating publication the subscription shoulfd be dropped, then create
pub and at last create pull subscription again. Unfortunetly this approach
does not work.
Vice versa when I first create publication P1, then another publication RP1
for the subscriber and finally create a pull subscription on RP1 having P1 as
Publisher, EM says that again first drop publication and then create pull
subscription...
So, how can I implement republisher replication model?
The answer is :
In order to use this topology the publishing subscriber must be a global
subscriber for publisher P1.

Reproducable bug, yay!

Steps to reproduce:
--Create test table of one uniqueidentifier column
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[UniverseCollapse] (
[SomeID] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL
)
--Add clustered index
CREATE CLUSTERED INDEX [IX_UniverseCollapse_1] ON
[dbo].[UniverseCollapse]([SomeID])
--Add test row
INSERT INTO UniverseCollapse (SomeID) VALUES
('F9CB8628-571D-463B-9E82-0AC4D0A3C2EB')
--Run the select over and over. Sometimes returns zero rows, sometimes
returns one.
SELECT SomeID
FROM UniverseCollapse
WHERE SomeID = 'F9CB8628-571D-463B-9E82-0AC4D0A3C2EB'
AND '6c03c85d-8151-43ed-858f-7ec5d887689b' <> newID()
Run the select over and over and sometimes you get zero rows, sometimes you
get one.
Without the clustered index, it never fails.
Looking closer at the two WHERE clause conditions:
1) SomeID = '...'
This is always the case, as it is the value that was inserted.
2) '6c03...' <> newid()
This is a trueism, since guid's don't conflict very that often.
If we run just:
SELECT SomeID
FROM UniverseCollapse
WHERE SomeID = 'F9CB8628-571D-463B-9E82-0AC4D0A3C2EB'
we always get one row. If we run:
SELECT SomeID
FROM UniverseCollapse
WHERE '6c03c85d-8151-43ed-858f-7ec5d887689b' <> newID()
we always get one row. Have both criteria together, and we sometimes get
zero rows.
Execution Plan:
|--Filter(
WHERE:(
[UniverseCollapse].[SomeID]<newid()
OR
[UniverseCollapse].[SomeID]>newid() ))
|--Clustered Index Seek(
OBJECT:(
[foo].[dbo].[UniverseCollapse].[IX_UniverseCollapse_1]),
SEEK:([UniverseCollapse].[SomeID]=F9CB8628-571D-463B-9E82-0AC4D0A3C2EB)
ORDERED FORWARD)
The "ID < newid OR ID > newid" is very interesting. If "newid()" is
evaluated twice, once for each half of the WHERE clause, and it happens to
get a GUID that has swung the other way, it could then eliminate the row
when it shouldn't.
If i only execute:
SELECT SomeID
FROM UniverseCollapse
WHERE '6c03c85d-8151-43ed-858f-7ec5d887689b' <> newID()
i get the plan:
|--Filter(
WHERE:(
STARTUP
R(6C03C85D-8151-43ED-858F-7EC5D887689B<>newid()) ))
|--Clustered Index Scan(
OBJECT:([foo].[dbo].[UniverseCollapse].[IX_UniverseCollapse_1]))
And it's only evaluating newid() once. So the question then becomes, "Why
does it fail when a clustered index is there?" Looking at the execution
plan if i remove the clustered index:
|--Filter(
WHERE:(STARTUP EXPR(6C03C85D-8151-43ED-858F-7EC5D887689B<>newid())))
|--Table Scan(
OBJECT:([foo].[dbo].[UniverseCollapse]),
WHERE:([UniverseCollapse].[SomeID]=F9CB8628-571D-463B-9E82-0AC4D0A3C2EB))
It doesn't do a "guid > newid or guid < newid", but instead does a "Startup
Expression". Which means that the problem is in fact that newID is being
evaluated twice for the "field <> newid()"

It should be mentioned that these changes to newid() are not intended for
this case. These changes ensure that Rand() and Newid() are only evaluated
once for each reference. Before if you aliased a column that was a Rand or a
NewID, it would generate a new value for each time the alias is used.
For example in:
SELECT
CASE
WHEN TheValue < 0.5 THEN 'LessThanPoint5'
ELSE 'GreaterThanPoint5'
END AS Test1,
CASE
WHEN TheValue < 0.5 THEN 'LessThanPoint5'
ELSE 'GreaterThanPoint5'
END AS Test2,
CASE
WHEN TheValue < 0.5 THEN 'LessThanPoint5'
ELSE 'GreaterThanPoint5'
END AS Test3
FROM (SELECT rand() as TheValue) ADerivedTable
it happens that for any given execution, Test1 Test2 and Test3 need not be
equal, even through you're selecting rand() only once. Because the rand
column is aliased, it generates a new value.
This is also a bug, but not quite the situation i have, since i am not
referencing the rand or newid column more than once. The optimizer is
internally turning my one reference into two references - and then exposing
the bug.

Repost:External Assemblies in Reports

Hi ALL,
Is it true that any custom assembly that I create ,by defualt has
"Execution" permission and if it dosn't attempt to have access to protected
resources like files ,that secuity policy will do and I don't need to change
any security policy?
I've cretaed a simple Assemly which only returns an string ,and I'he given
it full permission in report server security policy ,but I still get a
security error...
Any Sugessions?
I appreciate your help.
ALIThis sounds like your custom assembly does more than "just return a string".
Also, just changing the security policy configuration is not sufficient if
your custom assembly needs more than ExecutionOnly permissions. You also
need to explicitly assert permissions in the code of your custom assembly.
Some articles about using custom code / custom assemblies:

*

Also, if your custom assembly is signed you'll need to put APTCA on it.

I added "AllowPartiallyTrustedCallers" attribute to my assembly's manifiest
and now it is working.I think because "Host Expression Assemby" ,which is
responsible to call my custom assembly, has only "Execution" permission,it is
somehow classified as partially Trusted Caller and it can't call my assemly
without my assemly being marked by that attribute.
No My assemly dos nothing except returning a sime string which has been
constructed in its construcotr.
Anyways,thanks for your help .

Repost: Latches that don't release

I have encountered an intermittent problem where a stored procedure or query
will create a latch and hold onto it indefinitely. I have no explanation
for why the offending process fails to complete. Since the latch is on a
frequently used table, all subsequent insert operations are blocked until
the stubborn process is manually killed.
I've run across it about 4 times in the last month on two instances of a
similar database (SQL2000 latest SP, Simple Recovery Model). The type of
latch and the type of process that created it has varied.
Latch Type Process that caused it
============== ======================================
LATCH_EX -- From a stored proc. with a single INSERT
statement
PAGELATCH_EX -- From a stored proc. with a single INSERT statement
NETWORKIO -- From a SELECT query
Again, I haven't tracked down a legitimate reason for why the offending
process gets stuck. The table where the problems are occurring is
essentially a message log receiving ~400,000 records/day. It has 4 indices
and I've seen some postings regarding timeout problems on heavily indexed
tables with lots of activity. There are no operations that take place in
the database that are suspect for deadlocking. The vast majority of the
operations are simple one record inserts into a single table. All other
operations are occasional SELECT queries coming from a web report. Under
one occasion, the problem was caused by a select query but the others have
been caused by the insert stored procedure.
As a temporary work-around, I'm periodically polling the sysprocesses table
for waiting processes and performing a kill on the process if it is one of
the three latch types above and it has been waiting more than 10 seconds
(for my situation, accidentally killing a innocent process has little
impact).
Since it is not occurring in frequently, I have not been able to catch it
under a SQL Profiler log but I'll try to capture the behavior in the future.Hi Paul,
Thanks for using MSDN Newsgroup!
From your descriptions, I understood that some latches will not release 4
times in two instance. Have I understood you? If there is anything I
misunderstood, please feel free to let me know
First of all, I think compared with your large amount of data processing, 4
times is relatively a small number, isn't it? So it would be hard for us to
troubleshooting.
Secondly, we will have to collect the following information to make further
troubleshooting regarding blocking issue. The following documents will
show you how to collect the information when blocking
INF: How to Monitor SQL Server 2000 Blocking
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=271509
You will find we need the result from sp_blocker_pss80, performance log
from performance monitor and SQL Server error log.
I fully understood you will have to wait until the block happened again and
it may be hard to get the error messsage from KB: 271509. However, we need
all these information to do troubleshooting.
Unfortunately, according to our Newsgroup policy I was not able to monitor
this post thread too long and looking the nature of this issue, it would
require intensive troubleshooting which would be done quickly and
effectively with direct assistance from a Microsoft Support Professional
through Microsoft Product Support Services.
BTW, You can contact Microsoft Product Support directly to discuss
additional support options you may have available, by contacting us at
1-(800)936-5800 or by choosing one of the options listed at

an urgent issue and your would like us to create an incident for you and
have Microsoft Customer Service Representative contact you directly, please
send email to (remove "online." from this no Spam email address):
mailto:dscommhf@.online.microsoft.com with the following information,
Anyway, you could continue post all the information listed in the KB:
271509 here. I will be glad to serve you until it is resolved
Thank you for your patience and cooperation. If you have any questions or
concerns, don't hesitate to let me know. We are here to be of assistance!

Thanks for the info. I am running the additional logging and trace
mechanisms described in the KB article you refered to. When the problem
occurs again, I will hopefully have enough info to identify the cause.
From the list of the 6 common categories of blocks listed in KB: 271509 I
suspect #6 Blocking Caused by Orphaned Connection. Although the article (or
SQL BO) doesn't describe the scenario in detail, my guess is that a client
getting a dropped connection due to a network failure or Server performance
bottleneck and that connection is never has its locks released. If this is
the case, the artcle suggests that the only way to deal with it is to kill
the process (I guess my temporary workaround may become permanent).
I will repost if the logs turn up new info when the problem occurs next.

Repost : Using forms with Sql Server

Howdy,

Does anyone know of any packages that you can create a form and via a
ODBC connection save the data to a table ?

If it is possible to compile the form as I don't want clients to change
the forms ?

Any idea/thoughts would be most welcome ?

Regards
AndrewThere are lots of them out there. MS Access is a good one for simple
forms. DotNet is great for more complicated applications. Of course
these are both by Microsoft. I know there are lots of other ones, but
I have no experience with any of them.

HTH
Paul|||Hi Paul,

Thanks for that, but I would rather not use Access so looking for an
alternative if at all possible.

Regards
Andrew

look at Sybase Infomaker.

Usually used as a reporting tool, but has update capability as well.

ReportViewer's checked dropdown list control?

I would like to create my own parameter area for my reports which are displayed in an ASP.NET web page with the ASP.NET 2005 ReportViewer control (i.e. I have the ShowParameterPrompts property on my Report Viewer control set to False).

I would like to use the Checked Dropdown List control that allows you to check off each item individually or to check the (Select All) option for my multi-valued parameters.

Is there a way I can create an instance of this checked dropdown control or is there another component out there that is similar to it?

Thanks!!!

Brian

The control is not a public control and can not be created outside of the control. You would need to write your own.

BrianMy understanding is that the only extensibility area the Report Viewer
supports is hiding the menus you don't need and writing your own. So, the
short answer is to your question is no. To re-confirm, please post your
question to
http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/showforum.aspx?forumid=75&siteid=1. This
newsgroup is monitored by Rajeev Karunakaran who is the Program Manager of
the Report Viewer controls.

Thanks for your help. I have posted to the Report Viewer's newsgroup, but
no response...
Any other ways I might be able to see if this "checked dropdown" control is
available for use in an asp.net page?
