Resore .bak to SQL Express

Our vendor has provided us a copy of our data in a .bak files from SQL server. I want to run reports against this data. I have installed Express as well as Server management studio.

I presume I need to restore the .BAK file before I can run any reports? If so how does one do this?

Thanks in advance

In the UI right click on a database and select restore, or review the restore command in Books On Line;

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/tsqlref/ts_ra-rz_25rm.asp

Also here is a short example;

RESTORE DATABASE MyNwind

Resizing parameters

I have designed a few reports in VS2005 with multi-parameter controls. When I
view these reports in VS they look fine, however once deployed and viewed in
the webbrowser (MS Internet Explorer) the drop-down boxes are too small (or
the font size is too big).
Is there a way to adjust (resize) the control boxes so you can make them
larger so it's easier for people to actually read where they can choose
between?
thanks,

As far as I know, there is not. This has been a common request on this
news group. Hopefully, this will be addressed in SSRS 2008. Otherwise,
you could try to inject CSS; however, I think that styling is only
allowed at the Report Manager page and report border level (though I'm
not sure). Sorry that I could not be of greater assistance.

It doesn't appear that my last reply posted; so, here it goes again.
As far as I know, this not possible. It has been a common request in
this newsgroup. Hopefully, a resolution for this will be provided in
SSRS 2008. The only other thing I can think of is to try and inject or
reference a CSS/stylesheet (but, I think this is limited to styling
the Report Mgr page, etc). Sorry that I could not be of greater
assistance.

resizing a subreport

Hello:
I have a subreport displaying a title (actually a table with some rows of
information) that is common to many different reports.
I'll like to implement this title in a subreport and link it from the main
reports, but some of them are in portrait format while others are landscape.
Is there any way of resizing a subreport?
Thanks,

As far as I know, subreports can be minimally formatted size-wise;
however, it is very limited and portrait versus layout formatting is
not feasible. The subreport could be put inside a list, which could
control the layout a little better. Hope this helps.

Resetting stats for Performance Dashboard

I have installed the reports for the performance dashboard and really like it!

However, I'd like to be able to clear the stats in order to run specific procedures etc and see the most inefficient parts in the specific procedure. The documentation says like this about it:

The lifetime of the DMV data depends on the lifetime of the plan in cache. You can determine how long the plan has been cached, and thus the time frame over which these resources have been consumed, by looking at the Plan Cached column

What Plan Cashed column? Can someone explain to me how to clear the stats?

Regards Andreas

take a look at 'dbcc freeproccache' in book online.

Thank you!

Think it was exactly what I needed!

reset report parameters back to defaults

I am running SQL 2005 Reporting Services and designing reports via Visual
Studio.
Is there an easy way to reset/clear the report parameters back to the
defaults while viewing the report in IE.
Right now I have create a hyperlink which will re-direct to the URL of the
report which thus sets the paramaters back to their defaults, but it seems
that there must be a better way to do this.Hello,
Reporting Services did not provide the method to reset the parameters back
to the default.
Your solution is the best way I think to achieve your requirement.

required filter on Ad-hoc reports

When using the Report Builder in SQL 2005 some larger reports give me an
error message = filter required.
I assume this is somthing is a setting somwhere but where?
--
Peter
Peter.freeborn@.halliburton.comGo to Filter from the menu bar and select a column for the filter, you can
have prompt as well for the user to select the values.
I think, the Adhoc is designed in such a way that you need to set a filter,
because without filter it will be a long running query and will have great
effects on various things.

Repostition Parameters

I would like to know if it's possible and, if it is, how to reposition
parameters when viewing reports accessed through URL reporting and using the
Report Viewer. For example, we have 5 parameters on a report. One is a drop
down dynamic list of customer names, two are dates (start and end) and 2 are
radio buttons. We would like the list of customer names to be first with
nothing to the right of it. Then the two date parameters on the next line.
And lastly, the 2 radio button parameters displayed on the last line. I
cannot find a way to do this within SSRS or by using CSS. I fear it may be
totally controlled by SSRS with no chance for reformating or customization.
Thank you

As far as I know, you are correct. That said, you can change ordering
of the parameters (i.e., which one is 1st, 2nd, and so on). That would
be done from the Report tab (at the top) -> Report Parameters dialog w/
the up and down arrows. Sorry that I could not be of further
assistance.

and integrate with reports using web services. Having said that, its not so
easy to write on the fly, but pretty simple if you have some time to write, I
have been using this web services for long and believe me its good. To start
with you can go through some samples available in BOl and pickup the same pgm
and change according to your needs, that will make your development faster.

Repost:External Assemblies in Reports

Hi ALL,
Is it true that any custom assembly that I create ,by defualt has
"Execution" permission and if it dosn't attempt to have access to protected
resources like files ,that secuity policy will do and I don't need to change
any security policy?
I've cretaed a simple Assemly which only returns an string ,and I'he given
it full permission in report server security policy ,but I still get a
security error...
Any Sugessions?
I appreciate your help.
ALIThis sounds like your custom assembly does more than "just return a string".
Also, just changing the security policy configuration is not sufficient if
your custom assembly needs more than ExecutionOnly permissions. You also
need to explicitly assert permissions in the code of your custom assembly.
Some articles about using custom code / custom assemblies:
*

*
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/dnsql2k/html/dngrfCodeAccessSecurityInSQLServer2000ReportingServices.asp
Also, if your custom assembly is signed you'll need to put APTCA on it.

I added "AllowPartiallyTrustedCallers" attribute to my assembly's manifiest
and now it is working.I think because "Host Expression Assemby" ,which is
responsible to call my custom assembly,has only "Execution" permission,it is
somehow classified as partially Trusted Caller and it can't call my assemly
without my assemly being marked by that attribute.
No My assemly dos nothing except returning a sime string which has been
constructed in its construcotr.
Anyways,thanks for your help .

Repost: Installation trouble

Removed the previous version and tried installing the new trial - was able
to see reports in visual but not in reportmanager. So now I tried to drop it
all including all iis-catalogues and installed it from scratch again.
No luck...
My goal is just to get it running to see reports - not to get it running
with the right security settings...so in IIS i changed reports and
reportserver to anonymous access and then stopped and started iis and
reportserver service.
But when activating reportmanager it keeps on saying:
unable to finde script library
'/aspnet_client/system_web/1_1_4322/webuivalidation.js - try placing this
file manually or reinstall by running 'aspnet_regiis -c'
tried running to above and tried aspnet_regiis -i - no luck.
Have an xp operating system - is there a platform limitation for the trial
version ?
Is it related to my IIS-settings ? It shouldn't try to get the file above
when using anonymous access. I have had the previous version to function.
--MichaelNo hints ?
When using reportmanager I can do nothing in there - tried to make a
datasource but nothing happens when trying to save it. When switching from
one tab to another the error below pops up...

Repost - Forms Auth and the ReportServer web

I have an interesting issue. I setup my RS to use Forms Auth. I created a
logon page for the Reports web and and a logon page for the ReportServer
web. The page displays a
company logo, textboxes to enter credentials, logon button, etc. Nothing
extremely fancy.
The issue is this. When I navigate to the Reports web (Report Manager) the
logon page displays with the logo. When I navigate to the
ReportServer web, the logo image doesn't show.
What gives?

It seems that you use a wrong virtual path to your image (i.e.
/images/logo.gif)
Try to use a "full" virtual path (i.e. http://localhost/images/logo.gif)

Ha! Funny, see a few subject headings down from this post regarding "Excel

yes, it is expensive.. 7.500 Euro per cpu
> is it worth it?
no, you must redesign all your reports using ms word with the softartisans
addin, if you want to export the reports to word...
And by the Way, i mean the Support by softartisans ist very bad|||So we have SQL Reporting Services in SQL 2000 and 2005. The feature matrix
on SQL 2005 says rendering formats for output are the same: Excel, PDF,
DHTML, images... but still no support for Word.
Does this mean Microsoft itself is shying away from its own product, Word,
by not offering native support within SQL RS? Is there a new industry
standard in word processing that I need to be looking at?
I find it truly mind-boggling for Microsoft to not export to Excel, XML,
even Adobe's PDF (hello MDI?) - but not Word. And for OfficeWriter to be the
only tool available... ?
Any other products out there?

released.

ReportViewer's checked dropdown list control?

I would like to create my own parameter area for my reports which are displayed in an ASP.NET web page with the ASP.NET 2005 ReportViewer control (i.e. I have the ShowParameterPrompts property on my Report Viewer control set to False).

I would like to use the Checked Dropdown List control that allows you to check off each item individually or to check the (Select All) option for my multi-valued parameters.

Is there a way I can create an instance of this checked dropdown control or is there another component out there that is similar to it?

Thanks!!!

Brian

The control is not a public control and can not be created outside of the control. You would need to write your own.

Any other ways I might be able to see if this "checked dropdown" control is

ReportViewerControl and SSRS in Sharepoint Integration Mode

Hello,
We can embed server reports in .NET applications by using the ReportViewer
control.
Wondering if this still works when SSRS is running in Sharepoint integrated
mode and the reports in question are hosted within Sharepoint?
Thanks for any help,
JimHi I too have this same question. Now that I have my report server running
in integrated mode - I don't seem to see my report viewer/explorer web parts
any more...

with settings for the aspx page:
<ServerReport
ReportPath="http://<MyServer>/Documents/rptCountryTFLByIndustrySector.rdl"
ReportServerUrl="http://<MyServer>/ReportServer/"
/>

ReportViewer.SizeToReportContent - has anyone got an example?

I have an aspx 2.0 page using the ReportViewer control on SRS2005.
The report I am showing has drillthroughs to multiple other reports,
some of which fit on the screen and some are wider than the screen.
I would like to dynamically size the control so it matches the
interactive size of the report currently being displayed by drill
through. That way scroll bars would appear on the outside of the web
browser only when required.
I cant figure out how to do this.
I have tried setting ReportViewer1.SizeToReportContent = true; in both
ReportViewer_Drillthrough and Page_Load events but to no avail.
Has anyone got an example of this working?
Thanks,
Renato
To be clear this is what I have in the aspx:
<rsweb:ReportViewer ID="ReportViewer1" runat="server" Enabled="true"
Width="98%" Height="600px"
OnDrillthrough = "ReportViewer1_Drillthrough">
</rsweb:ReportViewer>
In the cs:
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
if (!Page.IsPostBack)
{
ReportViewer1.PromptAreaCollapsed = true;
ReportViewer1.ShowBackButton = true;
ReportViewer1.HyperlinkTarget = "_self";
ReportViewer1.ProcessingMode = Microsoft.Reporting.WebForms.ProcessingMode.Remote;
Systm.Uri oReportServer = new
System.Uri("http://wrypgpdbs04/ReportServer/");
ReportViewer1.ServerReport.ReportServerUrl = oReportServer;
ReportViewer1.ServerReport.ReportPath = "/PGP/Sales/DailySales/DailySalesNavigation";
ReportViewer1.SizeToReportContent = true;
}
}
protected void ReportViewer1_Drillthrough(object sender,
Microsoft.Reporting.WebForms.DrillthroughEventArgs e)
{
ReportViewer1.SizeToReportContent = true;
}Hi, RBot
I would recommend removing the width and height property from the
declaration of the ReportViewer control, to see if that CSS style for
the control is not overriding the SizeToReportContent property. It
would seem that even though you set the property to true, you're
constraining the control in the browser by using those 2 style tags.
Hope that works.

I tried this but still get the scrollbars around a iframe-like area.
The report viewer now seems to inherit the width from its containing
div element, which in turn gets it from a shared stylesheet. I can set
the width of the div, but this is static, not responsive to the size of
the report.
I dont know what style to use to reset the width back to "vanilla".

control.
In the report definitions I need to ensure that the Report dimensions
are larger than the Page dimensions plus margins.
Once this is done the scrollbars dont appear for the ReportViewer
control.
Strangely this is never a problem when viewing reports directly on the
report server via http.

ReportViewer with Authentication

I'm new to Reporting Services but have built some reports and have implemented them. I have used the report viewer which works great and has a great tool bar that users really like. One problem, I can't figure out how to pass network credentials using the viewer.

If I use the ReportingService class I can pass the credentials and everything is great except that I lose the nice tool bar.

I want the best of both worlds without having th build my own toolbar. This must have been done before but I can't seem to find any samples.

So is there a way to pass credentials (Basic Authentication over SSL) while still using the nivce features from the ReportViewer.

Or

Is there a different ReportViewer that has this capability.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

ThanksDoes anyone have any info on this? Does a ReportViewer control with the ability to pass credentials exist or do I need to create my own?

Thanks,
|||the short answer is "yes".

the devil is in the details...
are you using rs 2000 or 2005 ?
if 2005 I am also trying to get the details down.

I did some work with rs 2000 and see that a lot is the same but the winforms control is new and I hear they "made things better" but so far found few samples of how to get from "A" to "B".
I do know that there are two calls that deal with auth, one to pass data-source credentials and one to pass in "access" credentials.

the access bits seem to have several options.

when I was doing some hacking throuhg they did not seem to work.

I think that was due to messing with the report server and hosing it's settings.

right now I am building a test-lab with a local server and a Virtual PC to run my client app.

I hope I can get a sample working and share....

Ok, a few things:

1) you want to use *WINDOWS* credentails
2) look at the docs and as I recall you will see that you needs to create an object and then attach it to your calls.... System.Net.NetworkCredentails
you can create one with user,pass,domain and then pass that to the web services at key points.

So with windows credentials setup on the ReportServer web folder, I just need a windows domain account on the server (LocalServerDomain\RSExec). Then pass those credentials.

Looks like this has been sitting around for a little while:

for SSL - set the URL of the ReportViewer control to start with https.

for specifying the credentials to use, you should use the IReportServerCredentials Interface

Looks like this has been sitting around for a little while:

for SSL - set the URL of the ReportViewer control to start with https.

for specifying the credentials to use, you should use the IReportServerCredentials Interface

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.reporting.winforms.ireportservercredentials.aspx

Hope that helps,
